VGC reports that Build a Rocket Boy may be closing as another wave of layoffs hits the MindsEye studio.

VGC's September 16 report places the latest redundancies after a badly received release: MindsEye arrived in June 2025 and received Metacritic scores of 39 on PC and 29 on PS5.

In July 2025, the developer's PC patch notes said a performance issue found during testing had delayed that release. It said the issue was resolved, while the patch also targeted crashes during longer play sessions. This documents technical problems the team had been working to address.

The publishing arrangement then ended on March 16, 2026. A joint announcement said Build A Rocket Boy would take over publishing from IOI Partners; the planned Hitman crossover mission was cancelled as part of that separation.

VGC's account also describes earlier layoffs affecting over 400 staff and co-CEO Mark Gerhard's allegation that criminal activity and corporate sabotage contributed to the game's commercial failure. That is an attributed allegation, not an established explanation for the reported studio closure.

VGC highlights conflicting accounts of the outcome: sources cited by Kotaku said the studio was closing, while an IGN source said losing all staff may not mean dissolving the company. The report therefore leaves the company's legal future unsettled.
